RECAST is organised to mark the 150th anniversary of women’s admission to the University of Copenhagen. However, it is not only a commemoration of a historical milestone, but also an invitation to imagine new futures for both the university and society at large.

The exhibition departs from the University of Copenhagen’s bust collection, which holds more than one hundred busts depicting white male scholars.

The curators of the exhibition, Mathias Danbolt, Amalie Skovmøller, and Ida Højgaard Thjømøe, invited 13 contemporary artists to rethink and work in the context of these monuments, challenging the ways in which certain bodies are being deemed as more belonging in the institution.

As part of the exhibition, a selection of the university’s historical bust collection was relocated into the University Library, where the busts came into dialogue with the newly commissioned, contemporary works.

We would like to extend a thank you to Ny Carlsberg Foundation, June 15 Fund, Augustinus Foundation, Danish Arts Foundation and the Knud Højgaard Foundation for helping us realize this show with your generous support.

Video presentation

I DO ART conducted interviews and documented the work behind the exhibition. The result is this beautiful video, which also goes a bit deeper, exploring some of the key points behind the making of this exhibition. We hope you find a little break to enjoy these 11 minutes.
